Aug-01-18  talljack: Wow. Flat out blunder by the champ. 57. ... Ba3 is an easy draw. I guess he must have been seconds from time control. Great pressure by Mame.
Aug-01-18  messachess: Of course, 57..Ba3 leaves f6 unguarded. Not such an easy draw after 58.Rxf6!
Aug-01-18  turtle1957: Did Mamedyarov play 57.Kh3 or 57.e7 as the page https://en.chessbase.com/post/biel-... states?
Aug-01-18  Buttinsky: Is inside info
Aug-01-18  WorstPlayerEver: These endgames are seldom an easy draw. Stronger: its positions are rarely evaluated at 0.00. Obviously depends on how many pawns are on the board.

Valuable knowledge though, I'd say.

Aug-01-18  messachess: <turtle1957> Chessbomb shows 57.e7.
Aug-01-18  turtle1957: Why chessgames.com shows 57.Kh3? Even so weak player as I am sees that after 57.e7 white wins. 57.Kh3 is irrational
Aug-01-18  ChessHigherCat: The e5 pawn was poison on move 27:

27...Bxe5 28. Rxd7 Rxd7 29. Qxb5 Rad6

Leading to this position:

where black has nothing better than Rad6, dropping the bishop.

Aug-01-18  ChessHigherCat: Ba3 is a draw, but certainly not an easy one. With optimal play for the next 16 moves it leads to this position:

1) +1.16 (22 ply) 57...Ba3 58.Kh4 Re2 59.Rxf6+ Kg7 60.Rf7+ Kh6 61.g4 Rh2+ 62.Kg3 Rc2 63.Be4 Rc4 64.g5+ Kxg5 65.Kf3 Rc3+ 66.Ke2 Rc5 67.Ke3 Re5 68.Rxh7 Bc1+ 69.Kf3 h4 70.Rf7 h3 71.Rh7 Kf6 72.Rxh3 Bd2 73.Bd3

Here black can finally force the trade of rooks and it's a draw, but you have to get to that position first.

Aug-01-18  Marmot PFL: < turtle1957>

57 e7 resigns seems to be correct.

Aug-01-18  qkxwsm: If you watch the live stream you see 57. e7
Aug-02-18  soldal:
The official site still has the wrong 57. Kh3 Rxf5:

https://www.bielchessfestival.ch/To...

The live stream shows 57. e7 1-0, at 5:27:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oun...

Btw, already at 5:14, after 55. Rf7, Anna Rudolf gets a message that Sesse's evaluation is +5.47. So it seems to be clearly won even before Black's 55. … Re5 and 56. … Bc1 (Chess24's evaluation until Bc1 is around +0.75).

Chess24 has the correct last move, but while in reality it happened only two minutes after Magnus' last move, they have it happening after a think of 17 minutes for Mamedyarov (with 0:00 left), so there seems to have been a hiccup with the transmission of moves from Biel at that point.

Aug-02-18  cormier: Stockfish 9 26... Qf8 <better is 26...Bf8 27.Nd6 Bg4 28.Rd4 Be6 29.Qxb5 Qxb5 30.Nxb5 Rd7 = +0.08 (27 ply)>

Jonathan Sarfati: Yes, Mamedyarov pressured Carlsen until he cracked, just the same way as Carlsen defeats so many strong opponents.
Nov-15-18  Jambow: I saw 23... exd6 in an instant as likely the correct move. Confirmed that with the help of a very smart fish. After not taking the pawn Magnus is reduced to defending a position he usually leaves his opponents in.
Jan-10-19  Bobby Spassky: Amazing! The correct move is 57 e7 +-, and yet the official site still has it wrong.

Carlsen plays a KID with an early 6 ... c5 and then an early 8 ... d5, not fearing the Discovery 11. Ne5 Qd6 and later not fearing the Discovery 16. Rc1 a5. Things seem level until White picks off a Pawn, then 40. h5 helps create a protected passed e Pawn despite BOOC. The RRB vs RRB ending has some back and forth, then 56 ... Bc1?? 57. e7 won.

A purist might contend that a Best Games winner should not turn on a blunder, and they would have a valid point.

PawnSac: < Nice game > from the Shak! He put up some good numbers in this event. I'll have to check, but this might be his best tourney performance.
