Nov-15-18  Riferrari: I don't get why people think 20...b5 is superior to 20...Kb6. Just because black played 20...Kb6 it doesn't mean he will have to invest all his next moves in rushing his king on down on white. I think Kb6 is a bit multifunctional (ex: it avoids white's Rc1) and black has room for strengthening it's position before commiting to a king rush.

An Englishman: Good Morning: According to the FIDE site, Caruana *did* play 21.Bd2. Someone here bet $10 that he wouldn't see the computer move. Who collects?
Nov-15-18  diceman: <Parachessus: I fear for the future of the game >

Future?
I fear for it right now.

Nov-15-18  Relahara07: I think Carlsen is better
Nov-15-18  diceman: <PJs Studio:

10 bucks says they don’t follow Stockfish analysis right now. Bd2 w/Nc3. That is TOUGH to see.>

It's what I was looking at. (without engine)

If I can see it I'm sure they can.

Nov-15-18  ChessHigherCat: I think Carlsen's a little better too because he can recycle the DSB with Bf8
Nov-15-18  Absentee: <Parachessus: I fear for the future of the game as played by hyper-cautious hyper-prepared super GMs. At the patzer level things are fine, of course (blunders galore).>

You're suggesting that professional chess should be less professional?

Nov-15-18  beenthere240: If Carlsen is better, it's not his position, but the fact that Caruana will have to think and may blunder.
Nov-15-18  DrGridlock: <Riferri>
b5 "fixes" white's pawn on b4, which is likely to fall at some point later on.

With Kb6, black is trying to take White's b-pawn with his king, but will likely lose black's own b-pawn after Rb1+.

Once the position becomes "consolidated" with all pawns located on the king-side, black's winning chances decrease.

Nov-15-18  Count Wedgemore: <Riferrari: I don't get why people think 20...b5 is superior to 20...Kb6. Just because black played 20...Kb6 it doesn't mean he will have to invest all his next moves in rushing his king on down on white.>

I disagree. You see it now: Caruana has just played 22.Be3+, and I cannot see any other option for Carlsen than going back to c7 with his king.

Can he get away with pushing his king down to b5? Perhaps, but it looks dangerous for black.

Looks like we need to split $10, 6169 ways. :)

Nov-15-18  beenthere240: IMO if you don't like this game, you have a limited view of chess.
Nov-15-18  ChessHigherCat: The sad truth of the matter is that games between players with a 60-point gap are much more interesting than evenly matched games. No one can shine against Carlsen, it's like Tyson fighting his twin brother.
Nov-15-18  DrGridlock: In playing 21 Bd2, White was giving back his 1-pawn material advantage back to black in exchange for freeing up White's pieces.

Big question right now is whether the conceded pawn will be white's d-pawn, or white's b-pawn.

Nov-15-18  not not: both stuck in their own half again... cant they go straight to armagedon? Giri will chose opening - french exchange!

Nov-15-18  zanzibar: Personally, I think there's be good games throughout, and I won't complain about the draws until we're 10 games in.

As for the Rossolimo, sure, without the exchange on c6 it's more interesting but no matter how played, it's quite a welcome relief from the Berlin!

The clock tells a lot about today's game.

(chess24's notation display allows a good quick scan of time consumed/move)

White was in prep until about 14.cxd6, 15.Qxc7, but really thought hard (~30 min) when the game transitioned at 19.Bc3. Black took a deep in return (~20 min) at move 20...Kb6.

And now we into the flatlands...

Nov-15-18  Count Wedgemore: Okay, Carlsen played Kb5-Kxb4, but the bishop pair is gone, and Caruana got rid of his passive knight. This looks a lot more drawish all of a sudden. I still think he went wrong with 20...Kb6.
Nov-15-18  Parachessus: <Absentee> Yes, if it will create more excitement and bring more fans to the game. These are unruly times in the world after all, and professional chess needs to reflect that and stop being so gentlemanly. Perhaps have the players grunt loudly after making a move like some tennis players do when hitting their shots. Perhaps some "chess set abuse" to match the tennis player's racket abuse would work. People want spectacle.
Nov-15-18  not not: white rook in enemy half so is black king... it means FIGHT!!

An Englishman: Good Morning: Looking at 28.Ra7,Kxd3; 29.Bb6 and 28.Ra7,Rxd3; 29.Kf1. Not certain how Carlsen can hold on to the extra pawn.
Nov-15-18  Count Wedgemore: Now White seems to have more than enough counterplay on the kingside to keep the balance. Ng5 may come soon, and he can harass black's overextended king by checking him with his rook (Rc7+, etc.). This game will end in a draw.
Nov-15-18  RookFile: Carlsen is playing an aggressive game here. I think it's going to work out for him. Fortune favors the bold.
