An Englishman: Good Morning: There we are! Thanks for airing the games. Especially this one because the players have entered a very rare line of the 3.Bb5 Sicilian. Should become a fun start to the tourney.

moronovich: Black has an awful structure.I am not convinced that the pair of bishops is sufficient compensation.Soon we will see a white knight on c4.

MissScarlett: Carlsen is the <Buck Rogers> of chess - this is 25th century play!

An Englishman: Good Morning: In the only game in the database, Black played 8...Nf5 and won, setting up a ...e5, ...f6 pawn structure. Can't tell what Carlsen has in mind here. Meanwhile, many of the other games have devolved into mayhem. Not the most placid beginning to a tournament I've ever seen.
Jun-26-19  ajile: Playing an early ..e6 means that Carlsen can't get his usual "stonewall" setup in this line with ..c5 and ..e5. White now has grabbed the e5 square with his own pawn. Not sure why Black wants this line vs. his other line which has been working well lately.

An Englishman: Good Morning: 11...Ba6 threatens 12...Bxc4; 13.dxc4,Qxd8+ ruining White's pawns and probably winning the h4 pawn.
Jun-26-19  Ulhumbrus: Black has given up the right to castle but it is up to White to find a way to make that count
Jun-26-19  cormier: 12.Bd2 was a little better

An Englishman: Good Morning: The first draw of the tournament (Mamedyarov-Karjakin) ended in a perpetual; probably the first of many perpetuals. Pity about that game because it got very wild very fast.

As for our game, anyone else have doubts about Giri's 15.0-0? Superficially, it only seems to encourage Black to keep moving that h-pawn.

Jun-26-19  Momentum Man: The champ can’t get his rooks connected, and h6 is off limits to the kings rook. I see white winning this game
Jun-26-19  Ulhumbrus: 17 Qf3 withdraws the queen, but she has done her work on c6 by depriving Black of the right to castle.

An Englishman: Good Morning: But doesn't 15.0-0 mean that Black should not regret the inability to castle? Without making a move, the Rh8 already sits on a great square. And frankly, White's 17.Qa4 looks terrible.
Jun-26-19  utssb: ...h4 right away i like black

An Englishman: Good Morning: <utssb>, also like ...h4 but would preface this with 19...g5.

An Englishman: Good Morning: Astonishing how this game has turned. Looking at 22.Bg3 because if Black gets in ...Nh4 it's over.
Jun-26-19  Ulhumbrus: On 22 Bg3 h4 blocks the h4 square for the use of the knight but on 23 Bc7 h3 clears the square h4 again and anyway does the work of a N on h4 by attacking g2. On the other hand after 22 Bc7 Nh4 the knight obstructs the h pawn. After 23 f3 Nf5 24 Ng3 Nxg3 25 Bxg3 h4 26 Bd6 Bxd6 27 Rxd6 h3 28 Qc6 Qxc6 29 Rxc6 hxg2 30 Kxg2 White has the more active rook and pawn majority. His king hinders Black's king side pawn majority whereas Black's king does nothing to hinder White's queen side pawns.

An Englishman: Good Morning: At this point, 22...Qe4, 22...Nh4, 22...g5 and 22...h4 all look crushing. Personally, would pick the Queen move.

keypusher: Wow. And Giri used to be considered one of Carlsen's most troublesome opponents.
Jun-26-19  fabelhaft: In 23 moves with black against World #4

An Englishman: Good Morning: Shocked. Just. Plain. Shocked. Checked the website and it turns out that Black had a lot of winners including 22...Qe4, but Carlsen found the fastest. Aside from waiting a decade or two until he declines with age, how do you stop this guy?!

Magnus is perhaps better than ever.

dernier loup de T: First thing I see coming here: Giri-Carlsen 0-1, 23 moves. Wow! Good start, lol! Nothing new under the hot sun of Europe today; but I prefer this "nothing new" to unpleasant news! Go on, Magnus!
Jun-26-19  Pedro Fernandez: As <An EM> said: <17.Qa4 is horrible>. So horrible that Black just won with the h-pawn.
