May-07-20  Atking: Even knowing a fantastic victory of Nimzowitsch over Rubinstein I feel 8.b3 a bit artificial here. With black B on h5 what happen with white Q on Queen side after 8.c4. Yet a great game especially under such time control, from Caruana.

fredthebear: King's Indian Attack, Double Fianchetto.

Yes, after 14.e4, it's a King's Indian Attack. (FTB has complained about numerous KIA mislabels, but this label is correct.) However, that defining move allows the advance 14...d4, closing off the Bb2, leaving White slightly worse. In fact, both White fianchettoed bishops are shut out in this game thanks to 14.e4?! It does more harm than good.

White could/should have played e4 much earlier. <Atking> mentions 8.c4 as a better plan, going into the Reti.

Black dominates positionally, then tactically. The late middlegame break through is Nimzowitsch-like. He was outstanding in closed positions w/a knight. Caruana would probably appreciate the comparison.

May-08-20  SChesshevsky: Nice try for something for white with 39. h5 but was it necessary? Maybe thought it was winning? Or thought he was significantly worse and gave it a shot?

I'm not seeing a way for black to breakthrough if white just kinds of stands pat. Wonder if Hao miscalculated or just missed the exchange sac? Does computer show any way in for black without 39. h5?

May-08-20  Viking707: Great rapid game by Caruana. If he is ever to wrest the title from Magnus, he's going to need a lot more like this.
