Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-11-20  Ulhumbrus: After 21...bxc5 Kramnik in his commentary indicated that Caruan was in some trouble already because in the event of a rook and pawn ending White had the potential threat of Rh5 going after Black's h pawn.

In his commentary on the game between Carlsen and Caruana in the fourth round Kramnik suggested that Caruana calculated the variation 30...Ke7 31 Rb3 Rc6 and then played mistakenly the second move of the variation.

One example of what the computer analysis and evaluations and Kramnik's comments help to suggest is that when Caruana played 30...Rc6?? against Carlsen he overlooked or forgot that after 30...Ke7 although the move 31 Nb3 would have driven Black's rook away it also would also have conceded something to Black by displacing the defender of the e4 square so that 31...Rc4-c8 32 c5 Ne4 would have become possible, forking White's rook on c3 and White's f2 pawn.

Caruana could have assumed at that moment wrongly that because 31 Nb3 would drive Black's rook away it would <gain a tempo> and so would only do something useful for White whereas in fact it would have made a concession to Black as well.
