fredthebear: The machine says 2.Qh5? is a mistake. White was supposed to play a reversed French Defense 2.d4 for a = +0.16 advantage.

Thank goodness they didn't have computers back in 1620. Come to think of it, they would have need electrical outlets, too. Were there spelling bees back then?

3...Nf6?? The Two Knights Demise requires a bit of theoretical knowledge. Likely a fabricated game composed by Greco for teaching purposes.

The short, quick answer for Black to stop "The Schollers Mate" is 3...Qe7. For example, 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Bc5 3.Qf3 Qe7 stops the mating threat. Yes, Black has other lines; 3...Qe7 is a "one size fits all" approach that protects f7, e5, and perhaps Bc5.

BTW, 3...Qe7 does work in the above game for a slight Black advantage (instead of being mated). There are two better moves that obstruct the attacking diagonals.

May-12-22  Granny O Doul: I thought the Van't Kruijs involved 1. e3 and 2. Ne2.

Black Vampire: Chessgames.com, is it not an annotation mistake? Supposedly the game began with 1.e3.
Jun-23-23  Ziryab: Although this game appears in Francis Beale's 1656 collection of Greco's games, Beale does not present it as emanating from Greco. The actual source should be Arthur Saul (1616) or John Barbier's expansion of Saul's book (1640).

FSR: This doesn't look like Greco. His games were much more sophisticated than this dreck. He always played 1.e4, not e3, and never followed up with 2.Qh5.
