PeterLalic: <jeupham>, it was nice to talk with you again at Guildford. Were you as impressed as I by the tournament? I liked the name plates, complimentary pens, and spaciousness.
Apr-04-23  SatWiz: Peter - it was interesting to see you grind out such a long game & wear out your opponent to seal a win

PeterLalic: Thanks, <SatWiz>! I was proud of my endurance, but I wondered about FIDE law 11.1: "The players shall take no action that will bring the game of chess into disrepute."

On the 40th move, I assessed the RPPP vs BPPP endgame as drawn with best play. Subsequently, my sole strategy was to prolong the game so that my opponent might blunder.

Was that disreputable? If not, where should a FIDE arbiter draw the line? I was so desperate to win that I would have tried to continue for many more hours, if I had not run out of pawn moves.

Apr-07-23  Honey Blend: The score at the end says three time repetition claimable and I absolutely missed where these happened. If this is true, then in hindsight it was correct to call this a drawn endgame to begin with.

An Englishman: Good Evening: One of the toughest fortresses to overcome. The silicon monsters' input will prove welcome. Even if technically it doesn't clinch victory, 190...g3 was an inspired idea.

beatgiant: Tablebase draw until 207. Be5 (<207. Bg5> was correct, keeping the bishop protected so 207...Rc5 does not come with tempo against it).

I see nothing disreputable about playing this out. The resulting ending is instructive. The losing move does not look like an obvious fatigue-induced blunder.

Teyss: <PeterLalic> Congrats on your perseverance and win.

<Honey Blend> The position is repeated on moves 154, 162 and 173 but since White didn't call it, Peter was right to keep on playing. Is there a saying like "caveat lusorie"? (Waiting for the Latinists' hammer to fall.)

<beatgiant> Thanks for spotting it, I didn't see where White missed the draw.

Apr-07-23  goodevans: <Honey Blend: The score at the end says three time repetition claimable and I absolutely missed where these happened...>

The positions after 154.Bd8, 162.Bd8 and 173.Bd8 are identical.

Difficult for White to realise this when separated by nineteen moves in such an epic game. I bet his joy was complete when this was pointed out to him.

Teyss: <goodevans: I bet his joy was complete when this was pointed out to him.> LOL

Since the game ended at 1 am it must have been past midnight by then, both players (and the organisers) were probably exhausted. For info Timothy Foster also took a half-point bye the next day. https://chess-results.com/tnr748788...

Apr-07-23  Honey Blend: Thanks <Teyss> and <goodevans>. I don't think White offering a draw a few times along the way would've hurt given the circumstances, I wonder if he would actually try though...
Apr-07-23  JohnBoy: Is the 50 move rule no longer in effect?

  MissScarlett: At what point?
Apr-07-23  Cassandro: <JohnBoy> It's still in effect.

No 50-move draw here tho (143...Rxf4, 190...g3)

  keypusher: Hey, nice game title.
Apr-07-23  eaglewing: A tablebase says, it was drawable until 207. Be5 according to <beatgiant>. Still, I think, a serious error was done before with respect to ignoring an easy method to draw. Instead of 192. Bd4 (directly following the last attempt 190. ... g3 191. fxg3 Kf5) the move 192. Kh3 should guarantee an easily defendable draw by denying square g4 to the Black King and holding the corner for the White King (only using squares h3 and h2).

The Bishop defends on b8-f4, if g3 is attacked, and on a7-g1, if the Black King tries to move to f1/g1/h1 to create a mating threat. He should never reach g1 with Ba7-d4. White needs to check on that diagonal, if Black plays Kf2. This should be possible in any case.

Apr-07-23  whiteshark: "With three pawns on each side a fortress, as a rule, cannot be built. Salvation is possible only in exceptional cases: when the pawn structure of the stronger side has flaws." --Dworetsky

Apr-07-23  AIC: I don't know if any of you guys was just as insane as I was to go thru all this game. After move 172 this line preceeded all the other moves down to the end: "Three time repetition claimable, etc". Aren't they under the watch of a referee? Shouldn't this game be drawn? Or it is a draw only if one player is claiming it? And also I have the feeling that 50-moves rule might apply as well...
Apr-07-23
Premium Chessgames Member
beatgiant: <AIC> Threefold repetition is a draw only if one player is claiming it.

The 50-move rule is interrupted by pawn moves and captures, which happened at moves 40, 87, 125, 142, and 190. These have less than 50 move gaps between them, so no the 50-move rule did not apply.

Apr-08-23  AIC: Thanks <beatgiant>

PeterLalic: Coincidentally, I just rewatched The Long Good Friday (1980) for the first time in a decade.

I had forgotten how incredibly good the theme tune was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qB9...
