  FSR: Call the Boctor.
Dec-20-24  YoungEd: 18...♗f8! A sneaky sort of move! If the white ♕ tries to keep the ♖ protected, 19...♗b4+ wins.
Dec-20-24  ColdSong: Let the Boctor find the good moves for you.

Teyss: 18...Bf8! is surgical, just what the Boctor ordered. White missed it else he would have tried 16.Bxe7+ Kg8 17.Rc1 Bxc6 18.Qd2 Qxd2+ 19.Kxd2 where Black is still better thanks to the two connected passers on the Qside (-2.6 at 32 ply).

3...Ne4 is the famous Gossip Variation, it's what you hear in the Boctor's waiting room.

Dec-20-24  whiteshark: This game must have left a lasting impression on Cyrus. 18 years later, having become 'an expert', he wrote a book about it, <A Ferocious Opening Repertoire>.

Yes, individual defeats can have this effect.
Incidentally, Cyrus wrote dozens more opening books...

perfidious: Lakdawala was already a competent player when our sides met in a Montreal-Burlington match in fall 1977, and became far stronger after moving to southern California a few years later. I should say he had every right to style himself an 'expert'.
Dec-23-24  JohnBoy: Wageeh (Bago) & his brother Waheed (Baho) were friends and comped mine in my playing youth. Baho was the stronger until he pretty much quit. Good to see the Boctor name.
Dec-23-24  JohnBoy: Bago was always a materialist. His philosophy was *show me that Im wrong.* At the 2200-2350 level not all of us were able to sustain momentum for material.
