Fusilli: I thought I had some advantage until I played 29.Kf2 and Qd6 forced me to trade queens. Then I thought I was worse.

The computer says the whole game was fairly even.

perfidious: Seeing a QGD from Black was a surprise; in the 1980s, I was well acquainted with Nate from numerous blitz games at Harvard Square, and he always played the King's Indian back then.

This comes to resemble the type of middlegame which arises from certain lines of the 4.e3 Nimzo-Indian in which White never quite gets the hanging pawns going before they become a liability. He seems to stir up just enough trouble to hold the balance.

Fusilli: <perf> Did you know he is a professional opera singer? He sang the national anthem before the beginning of the second round. Deep bass-baritone voice.

perfidious: When I knew Nate, was aware he was into music, but may or may not have known that. Last time I saw him was at the last tournament I played, Foxwoods 2001. Got to chat a little. Even in the 1980s, Nate had that resonant voice; not at all surprising, what with all that training.
