Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-31-23  goodevans: Danny took over six minutes before his <6th move blunder>. His opponent then thought for nearly half an hour before digging the knife in.

A lot of players would have resigned in that time, me included, but Danny stretched it out another nine moves.

  FSR: 3.d5 is very rare. It looks like a beginner's move ("If you won't play ...d5, why then I'll play d5!"), but has occasionally been played by strong players. It was played with success in Rubinstein vs F van Seters, 1934 and Petrosian vs Hort, 1971. Csom lost a miniature with it in Csom vs Korchnoi, 1965. Petrosian got in huge trouble with it in Petrosian vs H Ree, 1973, but Ree (who had been 0-3 against Petrosian) agreed to a 10-move draw. Adorjan faced it thrice. Black was OK!, but only to the extent of drawing all three. Repertoire Explorer: Andras Adorjan (black).

  FSR: Peter Svidler in his Chessable course on the Gruenfeld https://www.chessable.com/lifetime-... gives 3...Bg7 4.Nc3 O-O 5.e4 d6 and now:

(a1) 6.Nf3 e6 7.Be2 exd5 8.exd5 (with the bishop on e2, 8.cxd5 is illogical, requiring White to lose even more time) 8...Na6 9. O-O Nc5, followed by ...Re8 and ...a5, when Black is fine;

(a2) 6.Nf3 e6 7.Bd3 Na6!? (or 7...exd5 8.cxd5 c6 9.O-O cxd5 10.exd5 Bg4, intending ...Bxf3, ...Nbd7, ...Re8, and ...Rc8=) 8. O-O Nc5 9.Bc2 exd5 10.cxd5 Re8 11.Re1 a5 12.Nd4 Bd7, with a sharp and unclear position where Black eventually wants to play ...c6, but for now can gain space with ...a5-a4 and in some cases ...Qb8 intending ...b5-b4;

(b) 6.Bd3 e6 7.Nge2 exd5 8.cxd5 (after 8.exd5 Nbd7 9.O-O Ne5 Black has clear play in the center, while White lacks constructive ideas) 8...c6 9.O-O cxd5 10.exd5 Nbd7 when Black stands well. The knight can go to either e5 and c5, and the rooks to e8 and c8.
