tamar: 17 Bxh6! came as a shock to Artemiev, who accepted and then ran down his clock trying to find a defense, but there was none.
Mar-05-24  paavoh: I did not really understand the point of 16. -Nd8. My first reaction would be 16.- Bf8 just to protect the King side, but without seeing why it was important...

HeMateMe: Perhaps after 14...f6, 15...d5 should have been played, to open up the center and deter white from a wing attack. As the game went, white had all the time in the world to prepare his attack.

DaltriDiluvi: <13.Qd2> was the first new move with respect to the CG database. Four moves later - after <16...Nd8? 17.Bxh6!> - White was winning.

offramp: This was Giri's only win at the Shenzhen tournament. <It is not very impressive>. How often have you seen this kind of attack: Bxh6, Qxh6, Qg6+ with at least a guaranteed draw my perpetual?
Here, White doesn't have to calculate anything.

In this position, after 19...Kf8,

Giri played 20.Nh2?

At Bullet Chess, Carlsen would play 20. Ng5!+-.
If Black replies with 20...Ng5, White would play 21. f4! That's too much.

That was a bit harsh. Yes, 20.Ng5 is objectively better move but it is necessary to see 21.f4 and precisely calculate all consequnces, as white is two pieces down and after 21...Nf7 there is no quick forced mate in sight. Giri's 20.Nh2 preparing f2-f4 was still sufficient and much less obliging for white.
