Troller: 8 players is somewhat on the cheap side. On the other hand, Bu, Dubov and Artemiev often guarantee interesting games.

  MissScarlett: A bloody second round.

offramp: GMs had the choice of quaint olde worlde Prague Masters (2024), or Shenzhen, in ultramodern China.

This tournament is taking place in Zone R, Sector 0FO of Shenzhen.

The venue is Building ZD, Block Glorious March District, on floor 152 of <Mandatory Great Progress> Structure, next to <Tang Lang Shan Gong Yuan>, the "Five Minute Hate Park".

Anish Giri is in room 1,141 of <Ten Minute Warning Industrial Erection>. He is on floor 310. Sorry about the lift.

For their own safety, they will be observed 24 and a half hours every day.

Atterdag: Thanks for that report, <offramp>. Put a smile on my face this grey and rainy morning in <olde worlde> Copenhagen :-)

Yu Bu Ma Xu - names for a quickly created song. Giri has become a globetrotter these times.

MissScarlett: A rest day after three rounds. Are the pieces so heavy?
Mar-04-24  SilverWolf: Before the tournament I correctly predicted that there’d be a LOT of excellency from Bu. I’m glad he’s doing so well— I want him to crack 2700 again!
Mar-04-24  fabelhaft: Giri lost three games in a row for the first time in a dozen years. The last time it happened was in Tata 2012, against Caruana, Aronian and Topalov.

Atterdag: Clearly, Giri is now too far away from home! :-)

Check It Out: Rough go for Giri. He's still in his 20s but he seems like he's part of the old guard. We'll see how he bounces back.

tamar: Hard to know how the players are faring, with no stream. Lots of up and down play, especially from Giri and Erigaisi.

Wish Anish well. It cannot be easy being passed over for the Candidates due to last minute maneuvering by federations, and then to start with a smashing victory against Artemiev must have seemed like vindication.

Mar-05-24  siamesedream: (V)Anish(ing) Giri.

Atterdag: Easy now! Any assessment setting Anish Giri on a declining curve because of a few defeats here would be nearsighted if not plain silly. Only a good month ago he was shared first in the Tata Steel (+5 -1 =7) - a tournament high above this one on all accounts.

Every top player has his ups and downs, and, as said, this venue doesn't seem to evoke the best in the brilliant chessplayer Giri. That happens.

perfidious: 'One is only as good as one's last game (or event)' is something of a cottage industry; this is far from the only competitive endeavour in which someone is proclaimed 'The Greatest' after a brilliant result or three, or relegated to the shades after a comparative failure.

MissScarlett: I wonder if Giri only got an invite because an organiser read that he's half-Russian.

It's as if there's a new Cold War in the chess world, with FIDE and India stuck in the middle.

Mar-06-24  greed and death: If there is a new Cold War in chess I can't imagine the young Indian players come out any worse off for it, getting tournament invites from both sides

Atterdag: The situation in the chess world is particularly complex/intricate because of Russia's historical domination in the game. I don't see a light at the end of that tunnel. Gens una sumus has become a hollow phrase, when one member of the "family" draws the gun and wants to rule the whole house.

MissScarlett: Here's a list of the top players in the current Aeroflot Open:

Why are some of the Russian players registered as Russians but some as FIDE? Do you have to be FIDE-registered if you intend playing in Western events?
