Mateo: I have the book written by Vidmar about Karlsbad 1911. It is written in german. About 43. Rxd7?, he says: "Warum nicht De4? Jetzt gewinnt Schwarz." I don't know what does that mean. Maybe that now Black wins? But if this is the meaning, I am not sure Vidmar is right. Of course, 43. Rxd7 was not good, but the losing move seems to be rather 48.Nc3+?. Instead 48. d6 seems to hold.
Sep-08-06  euripides: <mateo> The German means 'Why not Qe4 ? Now Black wins'. Black has some tempting ideas after 48 d6 with 48...Nb4 or 48...Rg6 but I don't see a win.

Mateo: <euripides> Thanks a lot. Now I know there is someone here who can help me to read the comments of this book!

Phony Benoni: OK, you do have to be educated in the Classics to understand this one.

in Fischer vs Petrosian, 1959, game #16 in Fischer's <My 60 Memorable Games>, Black's king makes a headlong flight down the board with four queens wandering around. At one point, Fischer makes the almost admiringly coment, "Slippppery as an eel!"

Does no one remember that? What are they teaching you kids today?

Jun-09-21  ajile: 40.b3 forces a draw.
Jun-09-21  ajile: Also 48.Nc3+?? loses quickly.

The Black king quickly infiltrates White's position via c4 and d3.

Jun-09-21  Ironmanth: Helluva good fight here; and way before computers. Bravo, chessgames for this gem! Y'all stay motivated and play great chess today.
Jun-09-21  catlover: Nice. When I saw the game title, I wondered if there was some connection with that Fischer-Petrosian game.
Jun-09-21  SChesshevsky: Was wondering what the French Alapin Variation was. Given the game, assumed it was something black came up with.

But, by the cg database, appears Alapin's idea was whites 7. Nb5. Not sure how good that idea was/is? Alapin (or his opponent) didn't seem to do much here to help support his named Variation.
