tamar: 28 Bxf7 is a blunder perhaps forgetting he cannot play after 28...Rxf7 29 g6 because the Qh4 is hanging.

Instead Horwitz could have drawn with
28 Rh3 h6 29 Rd1! Bolting down the d pawn before sacking the queen. 29...f6 30 Qxh6+ gxh6 31 Rxh6+ Kg7 32 Rg6+ etc

Other 29th moves do not seem to help black either, but 29...d5 is the most interesting.

Dec-17-05  aw1988: The Qh4 isn't hanging.

tamar: Sharp eyes, wolf. Not hanging, but equivalent to resigning to allow the queens to come off.

Horwitz still creates an attack with 30 Nh4 but Staunton's 30...d5 answers it perfectly and takes over the attack while defending the g6 square with the Ra6.

Dec-17-05  aw1988: Right, it's definitely resignable.
Jan-24-07  wolfmaster: Good comment, tamar. When being attacked
on the wings, countersttack in the center. I would have given Stauton's 30...d5 an exclamation point.

tamar: Looking at these games from 1846, I can appreciate Fischer putting Staunton on his top ten list.

23...Nb8 and 25...Ra6 aren't just individual moves, but part of the larger plan to break with ...d5 and stop White's Kingside attack from the sixth rank.

Oct-18-16  Aunt Jemima: White just doesn't know when to resign. This looks like one of my blitz games.
