keypusher: Hard to say why Mucklow essentially gave up with 36....Kh7. The computer gives 36....Rf6 37.Bg5 Rf1 38.Nf3 Rd1 39.Bd2 threatening Nxe5, and if, say, 39....Ra1 then 40.Ng5 Qf6 41.Rf7 Qd6 42.Rxg7 is crushing. But I doubt Mucklow saw all that...

I doubt Mucklow gave up with 38...Kxg6. The <TB> has <And White won the game.> Staunton's complaint about the <tiresome prolixity> of the match (E Williams vs J S Mucklow, 1851 (kibitz #2)) suggests it might have dragged on considerably further.

Feb-23-19  sudoplatov: The opening looks rather modern. Even Bxc6 is part of modern strategy. 4...Be7 isn't as good as 4...Nge7 according Chess365.

EDO has Williams as world #11 rated as 2518 with Mucklow as world #122 rated 1738.
