Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-16-08  depraved: Yates misses a neat combinative idea here- 41.Ng6+ wins.

Ok, let's test your conclusion. 41.Ng6+ can only be answered by 41...Qxg6 or...hxg6 as the king is in a smothered check.

a) If 41.Ng6+! Qxg6? 42.Bxd4+! Nf6 43.Qxg6! hxg6 44.Bxf6+! and white is up a whole piece!

b)If 41.Ng6+! hxg6? 42.Qh4+! Qh6 <The ONLY move that keeps up the fight. 42...Nh6? is met by 43.Bxd4! pinning the queen. 42...Qh7 is just as bad as 43.Bxd4+! Nf6 (forced) 44.Bxf6+ and black is up a piece.> continued...42...Qh6 Now 43.Qxd4+!! (regains the piece and threatens mate!) Now black must give up a piece to avoid mate! <43...Kh7?? 44.Qh8++> and white is still up a piece.

Excellent eye <depraved>. Yates blew a clear win here.
