  Dionysius1: I don't get it.

Daniel King says
"...in the opening, he [Sultan Kahn] wasn't used to moving pawns two steps, and that meant that sometimes he pushed pawns ridiculously quickly in the opening. There's a game against Edgar Colle, who very cleverly played the Alekhine's Defense against him, and Sultan Khan just kept pushing these pawns. Basically he just self-destructed."

https://www.chess.com/article/view/...

He played the usual e5, c4, d4 against the Alekhine, but where did he indulge in such an orgy of pawn pushing to justify GM King's comment?

9.h4 is maybe a bit early, but nothing to frighten the horses, and 12.c5 seems a reasonable enough reaction to 11...d5.

I don't see cause for comment.

Anyone?

  Yuridmi: Dionysius1 I agree
Mir Sultan Khan was a heavy-duty master-level player who lifted many scalps of the strongest players in the world, including Capablanca , Marshall and Rubinstein. He knew the openings, period. He lost this one to Colle but not from mishandling the opening

Breunor: Well Alekhine did say that if Sultan Khan knew modern (at that time) openings he woudl be playing him for the world championship. Maybe statements like that biased writers into thinking his opening play was causing trouble.

At the time I don't think people felt 5 exd6 was enterprising although now computers say it is as good as anything.

Similarly 6 Be2 looks passive (again, computers are fine with it nowadays).

If I had to guess what King was referencing, I'm betting he didn't think 12 c5 was justified. It cost him about a half a pawn:

master8ch: 17.Rxf7, 17.Nxf7, and 17.Bxf7+ all seem to me superior to what White actually played.

Dionysius1: Hi <master8ch> What do have in mind if Black doesn’t take back that much on f7?

Eg

17.Rxf7 RxF7 18.Nxf7 Qxh4 and I’d rather be Black – I’d have the threat of taking on b2, and White’s discovered check doesn’t scare me, and I’ve got active pieces and I’m a piece up.

17.Bxf7 Kh8 and I feel pretty safe with my piece up
