plang: Korchnoi omitted ..a6 avoiding the main lines and taking the game into one of the sidelines of the Steinitz variation. 11..Re8 was new; it has not been repeated. 16 Ne5! led to White obtaining the two bishops as 16..Nxe5 could have been answered by 17 dxe..Rxe5 18 Bf4 with a strong White initiative. 22..Bb3? increased Whites advantage; 22..Qxc5 23 Rxc5 would have been better. Also 23..Be6 would have been preferable to Korchnoi's 23..Ba4?!. Gelfand after 46..Ke8:

"The bishop is stronger than the knight, White's king is incomparably more active, and the e6 pawn is strong. However, he has to play precisely to avoid missing the win."

The pawn ending would have been lost after 50..Ke7 51 Bc5!..Kxe6 52 Bxd6..Kxd6 53 Kxh5..Ke7 54 Kg6..Kf8 55 Kf6..a5 56 Ke5..b5 57 Kd5..a4 58 Kc5.

Feb-16-12  SChesshevsky: A very interesting game.

After 19. Bf3, it looks like White's going to have a pretty good invasion. Maybe getting some pieces off the board was worth a shot. Something like 19...g5 and then 20. Bg3 Qb6 hoping to get White's KB and maybe Queen off.
