plang: This win by Milos in game 2 of their third round match in the World Championship tournament evened the match though Shirov went on to advance by winning the quickplay playoff. Shirov went on to defeat Short before being eliminated by Nisipeanu in the quarterfinals. 8 Qd3 is a rarely played alternative to * Qd2 which is the main line. In one of the quickplay playoff games Shirov played the standard 9..b6 and won; his 9..Be7!? was new though it seems a bit passive and has not been repeated. Accepting the gambit with 12..Bxg5 13 hxg..Qxg5+ 14 f4..Qg6 15 Qf3 looks very good for White but still may have been Black's best choice. 21..a4? created a structure where endgames tended to favor White; 21..Rxf1+ 22 Rxf1..Rf8 seems more solid. An example of the problem created by Black's 21st move is the line: 25..Qf7 26 Qxf7+..Kxf7 27 Kd2..Ke7 28 Kc3..Kd6 29 Kb4 with a clear edge for White. 31..Kd7? lost at once; better was 31..Bd7 32 Ke3..Ke8 33 Kf4..Kf7 34 Ke5 and White has a solid edge but the game is not over yet. Shirov resigned due to 32..Bf7 33 dxe+..Bxe6 34 f7.
