Jul-15-04  Spitecheck: Perhaps there is hope for him yet. Half a point with Kramnik ain't so bad.

Sep-16-04  MoonlitKnight: It ain't so good either. Any GM could just play 17 opening moves and offer a draw.

offramp: Personally I would have continued manoeuvering as black. Those bishops look pretty impressive.
Sep-16-04  Whitehat1963: Yeah, it's so disappointing to see games like this decided seemingly before they even get started. I wonder who offered the draw.
Sep-16-04  acirce: <Any GM could just play 17 opening moves and offer a draw.> But Kramnik would not have accepted it against "any GM".
Sep-16-04  sneaky pete: Kasimdzhanov was rated 2595 at the time and finished at place 11 in a field of 14. Only "any GM" Reinderman (2545) had a lower rating. He finished last with 8 losses and 6 draws, one of which against Kramnik (2740).

Both Kasimdzhanov and Reinderman (I'm not sure IF he held the GM title already) had qualified by jointly winning the B-group of the 1998 edition and as such, added to their comparatively low rating, were regarded as cannon fodder by the elite.

Sep-16-04  acirce: <Kasimdzhanov was rated 2595 at the time> Thanks for the information. Must have been top-100 at the time, right?
Sep-17-04  sneaky pete: <acirce> Maybe, but that's beside the point and you know it. Most players were around 2700 or higher and aimed for a full point against the 2 babies, so it is surprising Kramnik didn't press harder.

I made a mistake in my earlier post. In a 14 player round robin one plays 13 games. Reinderman's score was 7 losses and 6 draws.

Sep-17-04  acirce: <sneaky pete> I didn't even realize you were making a point, and neither was I. Well, in the final position if anyone is better it is White (IMO) so it's not THAT surprising, probably only Kramnik knows the reason for sure though.
Sep-17-04  acirce: Actually I don't even see how Black could try in a realistic way. After closer inspection it seems like a natural decision. So Kasim definitely seems worthy of praise here.
Jul-23-05  Hesam7: <acirce: <Any GM could just play 17 opening moves and offer a draw.> But Kramnik would not have accepted it against "any GM".> IMO Black stands worse in the final position. If I was Black I would be happy to get the half point. White can play and press d5 and risk nothing. The only compensation for Black is the Bishop pair, which is not much of use with the pawn at d5.
Jul-23-05  acirce: <If I was Black I would be happy to get the half point.> I agree. I think virtually all super-GM's would agree to draw here even against a "lowly" 2595. Probably some would try to win against a 2495 or something. My point was also that "any GM" wouldn't normally be able to get such a good position. It's not just simply about "playing 17 moves and offer draw".
Jul-24-05  Hesam7: <acirce: My point was also that "any GM" wouldn't normally be able to get such a good position. It's not just simply about "playing 17 moves and offer draw".> I agree.
