Aug-18-10  Calli: 28.Qe4 Rd8 29.Ba3! looks winning because of the threat of Be7-Bf6. For instance, 29..Qc6 30.Qe1 b5 (or if Qc7 31.Nf6+ is good) 31.Be7 Rc8 32.Bf6 etc.

tamar: Alekhine was drunk, but so was Wahltuch!

tamar: 28 Qf2 didn't ruin anything though. After 28...Rd8 White missed another chance for glory.

29 Bc1! Qc5 (or 29...Kh8 30 Bg5 with an interesting echo of the Ba3-Be7-Bf6 idea) 30 Nf6+ Kh8 31 Nxh7!

if 31...Kxh7 32 Qh4+ winning the rook

Too many weak squares. Rybka assesses the whole line after 29 Bc1 as 3.23/21 and rising.

Aug-20-10  Calli: <Tamar> You and/or Rybka are right. Just get to f6 or h6 and Black is toast. So this Bishop can swing both ways around the board? More trouble for the Catholics.

Jonathan Sarfati: For a change, Wahltuch had the B-pair, and almost took a fantastic scalp. Far more often, Wahltch exchanged his B for a N when it was unwarranted, against great players who would punish him for it (e.g. Capablanca, Rubinstein, Euwe).
