Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-14-08  paladin at large: Alekhine got the upper hand, as he frequently did, and applied pressure. However, Tartakower was frequently tenacious in complicated positions and held out. The move I don't like is 30....Bh4, which gives White the needed tempo to regroup upon 31. Qe6+ and 32. Qe2. Alekhine was so irritated, he prolonged the game by fifty moves.
Jun-14-08  nimh: 30...Bh4 was the best move, all engines at my disposal prefer it.

The decisive mistake was 27...Qxc3? (Rybka -1.41/18) instead of 27...Rfe8 (-2.43/18)

Jun-14-08  Calli: The ending should be a win. Easier might be to combine the King attack with the a-pawn advance. After 36.Rg1 perhaps 36…Qb6 (threat 37…Rf2+) 37.Rg2 Rf1 (threat 38…Qb1) 38.Qd3 a5 etc
Nov-08-15  Howard: So what do the engines say about this game ? Did someone miss a win ?
Nov-08-15  Retireborn: <Howard> Kmoch in the tournament book criticises 34...Rdxf3 and suggests 34...Rfd8 would win; Houdini detects little difference between the two moves though. An extra pawn in a Q ending is often not enough to win.

Kmoch is probably closer to the mark when he says that 28...Qxb3 would have given better winning chances.

Sep-02-18  goser: It is amusing that, having a pawn up plus initiative, Alekhine failed to win this game against Tartakower during the 1931 Bled tournament!
