Benzol: Alyekhin was very lucky here.
Maybe List should have tried 45.♖xe6 to activate his e-pawn which could have become quite dangerous.

Even earlier 38.♘xg4 might have been better than 38.a4

Oct-06-16  hemy: This game was published in the book of P. Wenman "175 chess brilliancies" (game 22).
Aug-27-20  Retireborn: I've just encountered this game in the Sherwood/Brandreth book about AVRO 1938, where it forms part of the preamble about the competitors.

They include notes from List himself; no source given but likely it's one of BCM or CHESS Sutton Coldfield magazines.

Alekhine sealed 35...b6. List was expecting 35...Rd8, but Alekhine persuaded him this would lose a pawn after 36.h4 gxh3 37.gxh3 threatening 38.h4 as well as 38.Nxc5.

However Houdini then gives 37...Rxd3! 38.Kxd3 Kd7 as drawn, as the white rook isn't going anywhere. A fascinating point is that the intended 39.h4 would actually lose to 39...Bc1!

List does indeed claim a win with 38.Nxg4.

I'd never heard of this tournament before. There is some information frrom <GrahamClayton> on this page:-

Alekhine vs R Bruce, 1938

Sherwood/Brandreth helpfully list all the competitors; Alekhine, Thomas (shared first), List, Menchik, Milner-Barry, Mallison, Wheatcroft, Bruce.
