plang: Game one of their sixth round match in the World Championship tournament. Adams won the tie-breaks After Short won game two before he lost to Anand in the next round. fter 6..Nf6 the game had transposed to the Kan Sicilian. Kasparov had played 8..b4 in his draw against Adams at Tilburg earlier in the year. Short declined an early draw offer and after 23..c3 he had gained the initiative with good activity for his two bishops. Short had planned the exchange sacrifice 31..Rxc4 although White was starting to develop serious threats at that point; for instance if 31..Qg6 32 Nxe5..Bxe5 33 Rd5 and White is much better. 35 f4?! was tremendously risky after Short's 35..Qa2!; a safer alternative would have been the counter sacrifice 35 Rxe5. Had Short played 36..f4! before taking on c2 he would have had a winning attack as Adams would not have had the defense 38 e6!. Short still could have drawn with 38..fxg 39 Qxg3..Qf5+ 40 Qg4..Qxg4+ 41 Kxg4..Rg7+ 42 Kf5..Bc5 43 Rd7..c2 but after his 38..Qf5+? he lost quickly.
