Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-01-04  J.A. Topfke: The first paragraph was copied and pasted from my notes to this same line in another Zukertort-Anderssen game: Anderssen's line, 6...Nxf2?, was tried twice in this match, but the refutation is 7.d4!, for instance 7...Bb6 8.Nxe5!? (the knight on f2 has no escape) 8...0-0 9.Rxf2. Better is 6...Bxf2+, where 7.Rxf2 Nxf2 8.Kxf2 transposes to the game variation, but here White also has the possibility of 7.Kh1!? at his disposal.

The losing move was 16.Qc4+? (16.Qxg4? Qe1#), because the queen loses contact with the d6-square. With the aid of Fritz it was possible to determine the best plan for White was to step out of the pin and avoid the mate threat with 16.Kg3 (16.Ba3!? Qxc3 17.Nc4 [17.Qxg4 Qxb2] 17...Qe7 18.Qxg4 b5 19.Ncd2 Qe3+ 20.Kg3 Qxc3). After 16.Qc4+? Kh8 the best move is still 17.Kg3, but now it is losing after 17...Qd6+! 18.Kxg4 (18.Kf2? Rf4 19.Qf1 Bxf3 20.Nxf3 Rxf3+! 21.gxf3 Qxh2+ 22.Qg2 Re2+! 23.Kxe2 Qxg2+) 18...h5+! 19.Kh3 Rf4.

Fritz also found 18...Bh3! 19.gxh3 Qxd2 20.Qg4 Re3 21.Kg1 Rexf3 and mate in 7.

Also copied and pasted:
On a side note, I noticed all the games in the database from Breslau 1864 had Zukertort as White and Anderssen as Black. Was this a handicap match?

Jan-01-04  J.A. Topfke: A typo above: After 16.Ba3!? the reply is meant to be 16..Qxa3.
May-26-11  TheTamale: White's method of developing his QB seems faulty. In the end, everything gets bottled up and he is doomed. DOOMED.
Jun-01-11  YoungEd: Indeed, <ThetaMale!> Note that after 22...♕xe2, White loses the ♖ if he uses it to protect the ♗: 23. ♖b1 ♕e3+ followed by a ♕-fork after the White ♔ moves to a white square. So White would just have to play 23. ♗a3, drop a pawn or two, and be doomed. DOOMED.
Jan-11-18  zanzibar: Bang (kibitz #374)
