perfidious: A pleasant victory for Sunye--rising or not--but White would score retribution one gelid January day on the Dutch coast in Balashov vs J Sunye Neto, 1982.

HeMateMe: Well, there is...a chess club...In New Orleans/

and it's CALLED the Alekhine's Gun/

And it's been the ruin of many a young player/

And God, I know, I'm one/

Apr-27-25  sfm: 18...Rxc3(!!) was (according to SF) not the strongest, it says 18.-,Rc4 is slightly better.

But the played move is the winning move, as it invites White to err. 19.bxR? is a major mistake, Black gets too much for the exchange. Instead 19.Sxb4 gives an equal game.
A brilliant game, also the inspired defense by White.

Apr-27-25  sfm: And nice choir, guys.
Apr-27-25  Teyss: Appropriate pun since Jaime Sunye Neto was only 22 and the only non-GM and even non-IM of the tournament (see crosstable: Rio de Janeiro Interzonal (1979)). He finished joint 5th behind old timers like Portisch and Petrosian.

<HeMateMe: (...) and it's CALLED the Alekhine's Gun> ? Oh, you mean here after Black's 17th. It's a half one, we could call it Alek's gun.

  Fusilli: <Teyss: Appropriate pun> Absolutely!

Sunye was six times Brazilian champion and made GM in 1986, but it was disappointing that the Rio interzonal remained the best performance of his career. Some Brazilians at the time thought he could be the new Mecking, but he wasn't even close.

May-01-25  Ruanpablo1: Sunye is a seven-time Brazilian champion. He certainly had more potential, but in addition to focusing on his career in engineering, he dedicated himself to the development of chess in Brazil, was president of the national chess federation and created the only school chess program at the national level. He even ran for the presidency of Fide as well
