White is two pawns up but Black retains chances of mounting a blockade &/or capturing one of the pawns. The right plan here was to go 65 Kh3! sheltering from checks. Now if Black goes 65..Ra4 White has 66 Rf4 threatening e5, while if 65..Re2 getting behind the e-pawn, simplest is 66 Rg8+ Kf6 67 Rg4 Re1 68 Kg2 Ra1 69 Rg8 and White has greatly improved his position.

Balashov's 65 Kf3 embarked on the wrong path and lies at the root of his difficulties converting.

When Black plays Kg4 White must be ready to go e5. Consequently 70 Kc6 was a mistake that Ulibin could have punished with 70..Kg4! 71 Rg8+ Kf3 72 Kd6 Kxe4.

70..Ra6+ was, therefore, a let-off but Balashov missed 71 Kc5! with the aim of re-winding back to the first diagram. Instead he went 71 Kb5 allowing Ulibin to play the excellent 71..Ra3! 72 Rf5+ Kg6 73 g4 Re3 74 g4 Re4 and the g-pawn fell, leaving White with a centre pawn and the Black King on the correct short side: draw.

In the final standings of this tournament, Leonid Basin finished first with 7.5 points. Balashov and Ulibin tied for 2nd with four other players on 7 points. So a critical dropped half point.
