An Englishman: Good Afternoon: In this critical Round 14 game at Hastings, Pillsbury plays the Stoneware Defense to Bird's Evans Gambit (5...Bd6!?). Bird must have thought he was crushing Pillsbury with his 7th through 12th moves, but in reality he fell into the trap which is the main raison d'etre of the Stoneware (Stone & Ware were two American amateurs). The game is mostly a one-sided romp after Bird gets caught in the snare, but that clever English bloke tries a cunning trap with 26.Ba3!, with the idea 26...Nxc2?; 27.Rxd8+,Kf7; 28.Rf8 mate! After 26...c5! Bird could have resigned, but struggled onward, hoping for a chance to play Qe8 mate on moves 31-34.
Mar-08-08  Knight13: <Just before the end, Mr. Bird has a joke in his well-known style; if 26 Nxc2, White mates in four.> LOL even Pillsbury knew Bird was tricky!

Oct-17-16  Mr. Blonde: Incredible to see Pillbury missing a very simple mate with 31. Bd4+
Oct-17-16  machak: <Mr.Blonde> mate in 4 you mean...
Oct-18-16  Mr. Blonde: machak, yes, a mate in 4. I meant that, after 31. Bd4+, it was extremely easy to find the rest of the moves. Time pressure? Maybe.

  keypusher: <Walter Glattke: Of Course, 6.d3 Nf6 is better, but dangerous for human players, who are not computers. 6.d3 Nf6 7.Qb3 0-0 8.Ng5 Na5 9.Nxf7 Nxb3 10.Nxd8+ Kh8 11.axb3 Rxd8 12.Ba3, and this test brings not -0,50 for white. 7.-Qe7 8.Ba3 good for Computers and strong players.>

After 8....Ne8, how does White continue? To me he's just a pawn down for nothing.
