May-31-04  Snow Man: Good show! (golf clap)
May-31-04  JFRAY: Botvinnik's games are usually boring. Not this one!
May-31-04  Benzol: This encouter bears a resemblance to this one Botvinnik vs Petrosian, 1966 played two years later. In the latter encounter Botvinnik seem to have the better of it but Petrosian's resistance was unnerving and Botvinnik made a fatal mistake at move 34.

Phony Benoni: <blacksburg: why 35...Qf8? hanging the d-pawn?>

The d-pawn seems to be lost in any event. White threatens 36.Bb4, forcing the queen away from the pawn. Black loses material if he tries to defend with a knight: 35...Nc7 36.Bb4 traps the queen, and 35...Ne7 36.Bb4 wins the knight on e7.

The only other way of stopping 36.Bb4 is to try 35...Bf8, but that just sets up 36.Nxd5 Qxd5 37.Rxe8, with a fork on f6 if Black recaptures the rook.
