Apr-11-05  WorldChampeen: Common motifs in the Queen's Gambit Accepted and a very beautiful miniature; I can recognize some of the patterns here, but what a flare Botvinnik has with the f7+ move. If one studies the situation, Schmid came up on both sides of the coin in these kinds of games, of course never against one of the former World Champeen's caliber.
Jul-03-06  nummerzwei: Schmid blundered with 9...Be6??. 9... Nfd7 instead seems OK.
Jul-03-06  Cyphelium: <nummerzwei> 9.- ♘fd7 10. ♕b3 doesn't seem to bring much relief, for example 10.- ♕e7 11. ♗g5 f6 12. ♘d5 ♕d8 13. exf6 gxf6 14. 0-0 and black is going down in flames.

ray keene: is this game really against gm lothar schmid-was it perhaps a blitz game or maybe even a simul by botvinnik against somebody else called schmid- a fairly common name--it seems like an uncharacteristic game for such a strong gm as lothar schmid- and also they only played twice at hamburg euro teams and both games are in the database-so what was this?
May-11-08  MrMelad: <ray keene> I took the task to research your claim and I have found some evidence to support it.

First I found the game repeated here
http://www.gtryfon.demon.co.uk/bcc/...

The fact that the event name from this source is "Hamburg Hamburg 1965" and not "Hamburg 1965" led me to believe that the pgn file used there is the same as in here in chessagames.com.

In this site http://www.olimpbase.org/1965e/games/

I found a list of all the games from the tournament "Hamburg 1965" none of which is a 12 moves decisive win (though a 12 and 11 moves draws were played) and of course – only 2 games involving Schmid and Botvinnik, none of which was won by Botvinnik. In this case, unless the two players had an unofficial game during that tournament, either the players are wrong, the moves are wrong or the event is wrong in this chessgames.com page.

Finding no similar games here in chessgames, I've searched google for combinations of "12. f7+", finding a very small amount (59) of websites to my surprise, listing this page as first. Though I've searched them all, I didn't find any further indication that this order of moves was ever recorded somewhere using the algebraic notation. Assuming PGN is the most common format to save chess files, and the fact that it uses an algebraic notation, I find it very probable that this game never took place.

I also think this level of play is unusually low for a player of Schmid caliber.

Jun-25-12  King Death: <ray keene> and <MrMelad> After poking around some on other sources, here's what I've found (not that it helps much).

One outside source lists this (Schmid vs Botvinnik, 1965) as the first game played in Hamburg while another one claims that the game on this page is. Not that we've never seen even GMs blunder but I agree with <MrMelad>, the standard of Black's play is weak and reminds me more of a simul than a real game.
