offramp: After his 48th move white is threatening:

49.Rxh7+ Kf8 50.Qc8+ Ke7 51.Qc7+ Ke8 52.Qxf7+ Kd8 53.Qd7#

48...Kg8 might possibly hold out for a draw.

Chigorin might have seen Kg8, but thought he would interpose an apparently unimportant queen check first with 48...Qd6+.

The trouble is that now the white king is on g1! So ...Rxh7 is no longer check. So there is no defence! Quite weird, really.

Both players played ever so well. You could always rely on these two to try as well as they possibly could.

tamar: <48...Kg8 might possibly hold out for a draw> Yes, odd that not checking would have made all the diffence.

What a letdown to lose it at this point for Chigorin who battled back from a dead lost opening with the creative and necessary exchange sacrifice 15...Rxd6

  tamar: Tarrasch comments after 15...Rxd6

"After the sacrifice, Black has a much better game than before."

But had he (or Pillsbury) seen 17 Bxh7, he would have to change that note, and the one previous which questions 15 Ne5 for allowing the sacrifice.

White wins back the pawn for nothing, since 17...Nxh7 18 Qh5 wins more material due to the threat on f7.

May-16-16  SpaceRunner: 46.Re x h4 would have been nice!!
