perfidious: Some info on Charles Hertan: while he has been inactive for some years now, he last held a FIDE rating of 2395, and the title of FM.

From a dozen or so games' experience on opposite sides of the board with him, he was a formidable opponent- one of the strongest players in New England in the mid-late 1980s.

IMlday: This game was played at the Pugi Memorial in Toronto. White follows a recommendation of Robert Byrne's with Bh6-g7-d4 but Black looks fine out of the opening. 14..Nc6 or 15..Nxf3+ might be improved upon as the opposite-♗ middlegame gets quite murky. I also drew a KGA vs Hertan at the 1980 Marshall International in New York and won a Benoni at Philadelphia 1980.
Sep-11-10  cehertan: After the game I tried to argue that I was slightly better out of the opening, but was rebuffed by Larry's classic response, "you're nuts". But I took it all in good humor and remain a fan of larry's creativity. He has a great game against a well known old timer (I'd have to look it up) where he sacks the house to chase the enemy king to the 8th rank in a middlegame and finishes with 0-0-0#! BTW, I was relieved to find a pawn sac in this ending ensuring an iron blockade and ending all winning prayers for black.

IMlday: My 15th was wimpy compared to 15..g5!? when Black has an attack to go with his extra pawn. I had won the Black side of this gambit so often that my evaluation was somewhere between much better for Black and very much better for Black. Nowadays some silicon sez only -0.37
