FSR: Did Dzindzi really allow 12.Qxb7, and did Gurevich then not play it? Hard to believe.
Feb-25-12  Granny O Doul: Perhaps they had something like 12...O-O 13.Qxa8 Qb6 in mind.

FSR: Hmm, you could well be right, Granny.

FSR: That is not to say that I understand this game, mind you.
Feb-12-25  generror: So this is the earliest Beefeater on file here, and good ol' Dzindzi is the culprit.

As to why not 12.Qxb7, in that case Stockfish suggests 12...Qb6. If White takes the rook, Black castles and the queen is trapped, as Granny suggested. And if White exchanges queen, Black has a nice open a-file to put pressure on those c-pawns (...Ra4, ...Bc8-a6, ...Nbd7-e5 etc.), and is slightly better according to Stockfish (-0.5).

So 12.Bg2 is definitely the better move, and now White does threaten to take on b7 as the are just in time to castle, connect their rooks, and attack the black queen on the b-file: 13.Qxb7 Qb6 14.Qxa8 0-0 15.Nf3 Bc8 16.0-0 Bb7 17.Rab1.

After both 17...Bxa8 18.Rxb6 axb6 and 17...Qxb1+ 18.Rxb1 Bxa8, White will be up a pawn, having the bishop pair, and a much better position.

Yeah, those GM games are crazy, and even with Stockfish it took me a while to find out what's going on here.
