May-03-04  midknightblue: Not sure who Schelfhout is, but he seems to have taken Max Euwe to school on this endgame. Euwe basically had 3pawns and a king vs 3 pawns with the king no where in sight. Easy win until his GM blunder - 47 cxd3? I think better is 47 Ke3

Chessical: <Midknightblue> Euwe would have also lost with <47.Ke3>

47...dxc2 48.Kd2 c3+ 49.Kxc2 b4 50.Kd3 Kxg6 51.a3 a5 52.Kc2 Kf5 53.Kd3 Kf4 54.Kc2 Ke3 55.a4 Kd4 56.Kc1 c2 57.Kxc2 Ke3 58.Kb2 Kd2 59.Kb1 Kc3 60.Ka2 Kc2 61.Ka1 Kxb3 62.Kb1 Kxa4

He should have played <44.Ke4> but it is a hard engame to win, especially as he cannot allow Schelfhout to sac his B for pawns and leave him with a drawn K + N v K.

<44.Ke4> c4 45.Ne2 d3 46.cxd3 c3 47.d4 b4 48.d5 Kf8 49.Kd3 Be5 50.Kc4 Kg7 51.Kxb4 c2 52.d6 Bxd6+ 53.Kc3 Kxg6 54.Kxc2 Kf6 appears to be very difficult to win.

Aug-26-05  Raskolnikov: 45.♔e4?? is a terrible blunder. Euwe could draw with 45.bc bc 46.♔e4.
