Apr-07-10  drukenknight: Need help from endgame experts! It looks like Noteboom loses this on 35 gxf4. Problem I have is how do I conceptualize the problem here? White lost the opposition but w/ Bs on the board it doesnt seem to matter. Whites pawns are on the wrong squares vis a vis the B but 35 g4 would draw anyhow. Or is he running out of space? The K should block the passed pawn but that hasnt happened yet either. So how does one approach a problem like this?
Apr-07-10  ounos: 27. ...h6 :) Nice mind games by Euwe! Indeed, 35. gxf4 *in retrospect* seems problematic, but it would be very hard to imagine the zugzwangs coming after 43. exf5 Bxf5.

In both cases White must yield. (Also note the triangulations available for Black, depending where is bishop is, if he wants to pass a move: Bd3-f5-e6-d5 or Bd5-e6-f7-d5.

Apr-08-10  drukenknight: not sure I folllow, you say "white must yield" but you also say the zugwang wont come up...?? I dont get it. Does 35 gxf lose? Im not sure.
Apr-15-10  ounos: If a winning position arises, but with Black to play instead of White, Black has some triangulations at his disposal to "pass" a move, so finally he gets White into zugzwang.
Jan-21-12  drukenknight: thanks, that actually helps.
