Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-21-24  FM David H. Levin: I like the subtlety of White's play. For example, after 28...g6

White made what one of Kotov's <...Like a Grandmaster> books called a "creeping move": 29.Qc4. This attacks the c-pawn while giving the queen access to the kingside, which creates the potential for Qf4... followed by putting the queen on the a1/h8 diagonal.

Another example is after 21...Na7.

Rather than defend the d-pawn immediately, White plays 22.Re1. This might superficially appear to lose a tempo (being that the rook will soon have to go to d1). However, after 22...Bf8, White's 23.Qd3 not only protects the d-pawn, but threatens 24.Ng5 (which would provoke the weakening 24...g6), made possible by White's having coaxed Black's bishop off the h4/d8 diagonal. Black seems to have nothing better than 23...h6, and having delayed Black's attacking the d-pawn with ...Rd8, White now has time for the attacking move 24.Ne5.
