Feb-15-05 | | AltoidJunki: I don't see what the threat is at 19. . .Qa5. Can someone help me? Why does the rook move? I assumed it is to protect the c3 square but I can't see why. Bc3 and black loses the exchange, so I must be missing something. Is there a fault with 19 ... Qa5 20. Qc2? |
|
Feb-15-05 | | seelyons: umm its obvious.. the KNIGHT cant move because the queen is on a5..the knight is pinned.. |

<Is there a fault with 19 ... Qa5 20. Qc2?>
I don't see an immediate win of material for Black, but the control of all the main open lines with 20...Re3 21. Rd1 Rae8 22. Nc1 Bd4, etc. looks like a decisive advantage. |

Feb-15-05 | | eyalbd: In "My 60 Memorable Games" Fischer gives 20 Rc1?.
According to his notes the threat is:
20 .. Bd4+ 21. Kh1 Re3 22. Qd1 Rae8 and the pin on the "e" file is decisive. Fischer suggested 20 Qb1! as the best defence. It protects the a2 pawn and prevents 20...Bd4+ since 21.NxB is possible. |

Feb-23-06 | | Fan of Leko: It's strange that a game where white plays so badly would be included by Fischer as one of his best. |
|
Feb-23-06 | | Runemaster: <Fan of Leko> Fischer chose the games for his book because they were "memorable". So yes, White played badly in this game, but that in itself might be memorable. |

Feb-23-06 | | Snow Man: that's sick dude. |

Feb-23-06 | | RookFile: I never thought about it this way, but I agree that Szabo didn't play well here. |

Aug-14-15 | | BwanaVa: Fischer's final comment on the game (My Sixty Memorable Games): "White's pawns fall like ripe apples. I'll never forget the disgusted look on Szabo's face as he took his king and just sort of shoved it gently to the center of the board, indicating his intention to resign." |
|
Jun-30-17 | | Wyatt Gwyon: Cursory Stockfish analysis indicates Szabo may not have played all that badly. Fischer, however, played like Fischer. https://lichess.org/vXoNmPj0 |
|
Jun-30-17 | | RookFile: So he made 3 mistakes? One is all you need to lose to Fischer. My opinion is that Bxf6 was the worst of the 3. You never give up the dark squares in these types of games without a very good reason. |

Surely it should be, "...indicating that he was resigning." |

 | | plang: Fischer's move order with 4..0-0 (rather than 4..d6) is interesting - encouraging 5 e5!?. Also, after the standard 4..d6 the response 5 Bg5 is imprecise due to 5..h6 6 Be3..Ng4 while after Fischer's 4..0-0 White can effectively play 5 Bg5 and 6 Qd2. 8 Bd3 was a new move; 8 f3 and 8 Be2 are the most popular moves. 9 cxd..a6 10 f4..h6 11 Bh4..Nxe4 12 Bxd8..Nxd2 13 Bc7..Bxc3 14 bxc..Ne4 15 Bxe4..Re8 would have been promising for Black. White was OK until 13 f4 creating dark square weaknesses; 13 Nc3 would have maintained equality. |
