Jan-18-05 | | JohnnyRambo: If I remember this correctly,
Fischer said that 45. Rc7+ Kg8
46. Rc8+ Rf8 47. Rxf8+ Kxf8 48. Bb5
wins for white. With the knight
stalemated white can treat this as
a simple king and 2 pawns vs. King
and 1 pawn ending. |

Aug-30-10 | | technical draw: And 5 years later TD says, hmmm, Fischer was right! |

Jul-24-11 | | 4tmac: This 11 game match was even when abandoned. The first 4 games were in NY, the last 7 in LA. It was an interesting match partly because Bobby was only 18 & Reshevsky was almost 50. This was game 8 & was played fifty years ago in early August 1961. |

Nov-07-11 | | AnalyzeThis: According to Jerry Hanken:
<Hanken told me one more story about a crucial game in the match, which was adjourned with Fischer in a winning bishop-versus-knight endgame. “It was obvious to everyone who was watching, 25 spectators or so, that the game was over. Reshevsky looked like a beaten man,” Hanken said. “But then Fischer didn’t play the winning move!”“Reshevsky raised his eyebrow and played his move, after which there was no win to be had. Fischer kept looking, but once he had missed his chance, it just wasn’t going to happen. Finally, Fischer looked right at Reshevsky, and said, in a voice so soft that you could barely hear it: ‘You bastard.’” And that’s how you offer a draw, if you’re Bobby Fischer.> Source:

Jan-17-15 | | RookFile: Reshevsky was so tough mentally that he probably took it as a compliment. |

 | | chancho: If this is the adjourned game that Fischer claimed he would win, no doubt he was embarrassed that he failed to win it. |

Jan-18-15 | | RookFile: I think it's an example of what Kasparov said about the Reshevky match toughening Fischer up. Consider for example Fischer's final game against Spassky in 1972, the one that gave him the world championship. He stayed up all night analyzing his heart out, leaving nothing to chance. He had learned his lesson. |

45.Rc7+.

Black can't play 45...Kf8 because that loses the knight immediately: 46.Rc8+ and 47.Rxb8.
And Black cannot play (after 45. Rc7+) Rf7 46. Rxf7+Kxf7 47. Bb5, which corrals the knight...

...If black tries to save the knight, Black loses the ♙h6, with an easy win. The best move is 45...Kg8.

But now is a killer move:
46.Bc4+!
Whether the king goes to f8 or h8, then Rc8+ wins the knight. The original winning variation boiled down to two moves:
45,Rc7+ Kg8 46.Bc4+.
Reshevsky defended for a long, long time to save the game. If someone manages to save half a point by playing good moves, that does not make him a "bastard". If Fischer had said, "You bastard" while shaking his head and smiling, then Reshevsky could have found it funny. Somehow I don't think Fischer was in a complimentary mood. |

 | | plang: Fischer had played 5 Nc3 in games 2 (win) and also 4 and 6 (both draws); here he tried 5 c4 although he has never had much success with it. 14 f4 was new and is now considered a mainline; 14 f3 and 14 Bf3 had been played previously. Nowadays Black usually plays 14..b5; here he tried 14..Bg4. 23..Qd8 24 Rc6 would have been strong for White. Donaldson gives 28..Rxc3 as stronger with Black drawing after 29 Rxd6..Rc1+ 30 Kh2..Ne3 31 Bd3..Rd1 32 g4..Nc2 33 Rc6..Rd2+ 34 Kg1..Nd4 35 Rc8+..Kg7 36 Bxa6..Nf3+ 37 Ke1..Nf3+ etc.. 31..Rb8 was another suggested improvement. |
