Apr-22-02		refutor: 12.g3?! do any theoretical people have an opinion on this? as an amateur theoretician, i think the "normal" 12.d3/12.d4 is better. was fischer just playing it to get out of theory?

Oct-06-02		drukenknight: My bio. says indeed "yes" he was playing to get out of book. The open fianchetto formation looks like an affectation, I guess it. Has anyone tried the R "sack" at this pt? I.e. 12 a4 Bd6 13 Rxd5 dxg5 14 Bxg5

Oct-06-02		Honza Cervenka: 12.g3 was Fischer's invention in Marshall. He played that with O'Kelly in Havana 1965 (see Fischer vs O'Kelly de Galway, 1965 ) Also other GMs used this move, especially Matanovic, Byrne or Timman.

Oct-07-02		Honza Cervenka: Timman played that with Huebner in Tilburg 1985 (see Timman vs Huebner, 1985 ), Matanovic used it against Geller in the interzonal tournament 1967 (see A Matanovic vs Geller, 1967 ) and Ostojic in Yugoslav championship in Novi Travnik 1969 (I did not find it in this database). Byrne played that with Hebden in New York 1983 (The game is not in the database too; according to chessbase there was played 12.Re1 Bd6 13.g3 but it is only little detail as 12.g3 Bd6 13.Re1 leads to the same position. Suetin quotes this game in variatin 12.g3 in his book about RL.)

Oct-07-02		drukenknight: Honza has anyone tried 12 a4? could not find any in data base. My line above is mistyped; CORRECTED LINE: 12 a4 Bd6 13 Rxd5 (why lose a tempo when I can sack the rook?) ...cxd5 14 Bxd5 Rb8 But be careful, if 14...Qh4 15 Bxa8?? loses the game!

Oct-07-02		Honza Cervenka: 14.Bxd5 in your line is not good for 14...Bxh2+ and 15...Qxd5. Better seems to be 14.axb5 Qh4 15.g3 Qe4 16.d3 Qf5. 12.a4 was played but I never saw that with continuation 12...Bd6 13.Rxd5!?

Mar-30-04		iron maiden: By holding Fischer to a draw in this game, Spassky kept level with him on the scoreboard of the tournament, and in the next and final round he was able to pull ahead by beating Donner.

Mar-30-04		refutor: drukenknight...12.a4 is fascinating in the fact that it almost works, i can't help but think that white's lack of development will bite him in the @$$ eventually, but the rook sack is worth a one-time attempt in blitz ;)
