Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-04-06  Maynard5: The motivation for 12. Bxe7 is not clear. White just leaves Black with a strong dark-bound bishop. Still, Gulko's effective use of the strong square e4, which he occupies first with a rook, then with a knight, is quite skillful.
Dec-02-12  vinidivici: The real problem for white is the move 53.Kf3

The right move 53.e4! would bring the draw.
53...Ke5
54.Kf3 (white has a reserved tempi from g4-g5 so better avoid the opposition) g5 55.Ke3 f6
56.Kd3 Kf4
57.Kd4 Kg3
58.Kd5 Kxh3
59.Ke6 Kxg4
60.Kxf6...draw

Dec-03-12  vinidivici: Correction:
<54.Kf3 (white has a reserved tempi from g4-g5 so better avoid the opposition) g5 55.Ke3 f6 >

It should be : BLACK has a reserved tempi from g4-g5 so better avoid the opposition.

And the the problem with 53.Kf3 lies with the prophylactic 53...Kg5 just like in the game.

But the undoing of Kg5 could be neutralized with e4.

Assuming:
53.e4 Kg5
54.Kg3, now

54...f6 ?? and 55.h4#

these all draw.

54...h5 and 55.h4+ Kf6 56.g5+ Ke5 57.Kf3 draw. If black king perseveres to take a3 pawn then he would die soon.

54...Kf6 55.Kf4 g5+ 56.Kf3 Ke5 57.Ke3 f6 58.Kd3 Kf4 59.Kd4

54...f5 55.gxf5 gxf5 56.exf5 Kxf5

Feb-22-21  Straclonoor: Initially pawn ending drawn.
