xenophon: always thought Gunsberg's first name sounded like something straight out of Tolkein
Aug-30-08  kevin86: After a series of exchanges and sub-exchanges,black ends up with rook, knight, and bishop against a sole queen. Add a few extra pawns to the mix and the queen becomes busier than a one-armed house painter trying to work around a hornet's nest.
Aug-30-08  whiteshark: <Isidor Open?> P Orr Isidor de Winter Klose ?
Aug-30-08  A.G. Argent: <kevin86> Heeey, take it easy, mister, some of my best friends are one-armed house painters. But you're imagery is perfect. Seems as though once Paulsen lost any and all support for his battered Queen and the contest being pretty much decided, he soldiered on, dodging and swatting at Gunsberg's hornets with his Queen only because it was a Queen. Bit stubborn, that.
Aug-30-08  apexin: Actually Isidor used to be a very popular name in scandinavian countries and germany even still in the 60s and 70s.
Aug-30-08  Once: Tolkien based much of his Lord of the Rings on Anglo Saxon and old Norse poetry, so it's not too surprising that there are links to Scandinavian names.

But if you've seen the films, just trying saying "Mordor" without rolling your r's like an Old Vic thesp - Morrrdorrr.

Aug-30-08  capybara: This was a really interesting game. As already noted, white had problems from the start because of his choice of opening. But it was a really good game from Gunsberg, especially his endgame.
Aug-30-08  A.G. Argent: <Once> <...an Old Vic thesp - Morrdorr.> Yes, so true, in particular, Sir Ian Gandalf.
Aug-30-08  Once: <A.G. Argent> Or the actor who also played Agent Smith in the Matrix. His entire character acting repertoire seems to be to speak very slowly and carefully enunciate every single syllable - whether he is playing an elf or a computer generated agent.
Aug-30-08  jovack: Black had an easy job making a nice game because white was happy to keep letting himself get pinned.

  HeMateMe: How about "Paul Bearer"?
Aug-29-18  morfishine: W Paulsen was a farmer by profession and a renowned potato breeder. Personally, I'd rather not see potatoes breeding

And especially not "couch" potatos.

In Middle Earth all sorts of strange and wonderful things can happen.

Aug-29-18  WorstPlayerEver: After 0-0-0 Black is in deep trouble.

Aug-29-18  ACMEKINGKRUSHER: UGH,

After watching MAGNUS & Hikaru's 97 Mover, This game is Amateurish at BEST! WHITE may have had a QUEEN, but was Totally "OUTGUNNED" by BLACK and should have QUIT way before he did!

Tuning in Mr. Peabody's WAY BACK MACHINE...

I personally have WON a REAL TOURNAMENT Game with a QUEEN in a similar situation against a Player rated 299 points more than I. I did have some advantages though! 1.My opponent had WHITE, so as BLACK, I had choice of EQUIPMENT! D♖UE♔E ♙ieces, (Just ♗efore ULTIMATES), JE♖GE♖ Clock (♗efore Digitals were worth a S%*T & ♙opular), and an A♗SOLUTELY ♙LAI♘ VI♘YL ♗OA♖D 2. Did I mention that this was during the time that The US was going ALGEBRAIC? 3. My Opponent,(who actually WAS a Friend & fellow Organizer) was evidently going ALGEBRAIC! During the game, I saw him doing his ABC's across the board Quite a Few Times! 4. He became even Deeper DEMORALIZED when Early in the game I knew I could WIN, but instead I figured I'd make my Move and OFFER Him a DRAW. "D" became TOTALLY P@**%D OFF! We Played on and it was getting Obvious that I was Going To W I N! If memory serves me correctly his use of TIME was also a problem as I had used about 23 minutes of so and he had used well over three times that. In fact HE SHOULD HAVE RESIGNED, but DRAGGED it out to MATE 69 Moves as he was looking for anything at this point not to lose, even one or more STALEMATES that I saw and avoided! Did I mention that he walked into the same TRAP TWICE! When done he barely, (if he even did), shook my hand and left the room as fast as his two legs could fly without actually running! HE WAS TOTALLY KRUSHED! Lucky for me it was written down and It is still surviving in Multiple places now. I guess "D" made a Few Mistakes!! 1A. He TOTALLY UNDERESTIMATED His Opponent! 2B. Should have Taken The DRAW OFFER 40 or so moves earlier. His "ATTITUDE" after the DRAW OFFER was so Horrible that I decided then to CONCENTRATE & W I N! 3C. Probably should have switched back to descriptive OR Learned ALGEBRAIC a Wee Bit Better before the Tournament! Unfortunately we did not discuss the game afterwards, so I will never know the answers to WHY he did what he did that day in KANSAS!

Back to The Current Day! or actually 1883! Ole WILFRIED Dragged his game to 51 Moves. At least he did NOT drag it out to MATE!

Nakamura would have Totally DESTROYED Both of these guys with No trouble at all! The ACME KING KRUSHER!

P.S. N E V E R UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT!
