Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-29-06  Knight13: Well I don't see the checkkmate after 17... Qc7, but he sure is dead once White plays something like Rad1-d3-g3. So maybe I did see it... :-p
Apr-29-06  blingice: Well, there is a mate in 4, which black can't stop. The mate after 18. Bxh7+ Kh8 19. Bg6+ Kg8 20. Qh7+ Kf8 21. Qxf7#, and I don't think black could play any 17th move to prevent it. (This is actually the longest forced mate I've ever solved, even though it's simple...hooray...)
Apr-29-06  Knight13: <blingice> Try 17... Qc7. That's what made me think of Rad1-d3-g3 and other stuff.
Apr-30-06  blingice: Well, I think that's prevented easily in the three moves. Example: at some time, the black knight escapes to f4 and then to g6. I have Chessmaster thinking about it currently.
Apr-30-06  blingice: The weird line that Chessmaster sees (and this is actually best scenario for black) is <17...Qd7 18.Bxh7+ Kh8 19.exd5 Bb4 20.Bf5+ Kg8 21.Bxd7 a5 22.Bf5 Bd2 23.Qxd2 Kg7 24.Rae1 Rh8 25.Qd3>, giving a +15.64 evaluation.

Yes, Chessmaster actually gave 17...Qd7. With your move of 17...Qc7 (which it thought was the best moves for a while), it gave the line <17...Qc7 18.Bxh7+ Kh8 19.Bf5+ Kg8 20.exd5 Bb4 21.Bh7+ Kh8 22.Rad1 Bd2 23.Rxd2 f5 24.Bxf5+ Kg8 25.Rd3 Re6 26.Rg3+ Rg6 27.Rxg6+ fxg6 28.Be6+ Qf7 29.Bxf7+ Kxf7>, evaluated at +13.15 (it is a shorter calculated line than the one above, actually seen as best moves by both black and white).

Why it evaluated 17..Qd7 better than 17..Qc7, I really can't figure out. Can someone with Rybka, Fritz, or Shredder please analyze black's (possible) 17th move also?

I'll look at it tomorrow (maybe not, since I have an AP test to study for).

Apr-30-06  RandomVisitor: For Black, all moves lead directly to mate. 17...Qd7 takes the machine a little longer to find, so the Rybka picks this one as the only alternative.
