profK: The 72 Spassky - Fischer Taimanov Sicilian virtually transposes into this game, with a different result for Black....
Jul-07-14  thom0909: Why 25...Rb4 and not Rxb3?
Mar-10-15  zydeco: <thom0909> Black didn't like 25....Rxb4 26.f4 Bc3 (or b2) 27.Rfxd5. The idea with 25....Rb4 is to meet 26.f4 with 26....Bd4+.

The 'book' on Portisch was to play off-beat, 'museum' openings against him to get him out of his cutting-edge preparation. In the '60s the Scotch would have qualified as a museum opening.

Portisch seems fine out of the opening but then something goes wrong with his strategical plan -- 23....c4 turns out to be premature. Maybe something like 22....Rd8 is more solid.

perfidious: <zydeco....In the '60s the Scotch would have qualified as a museum opening.>

So it was, until Kasparov reintroduced it in the normal form, though I recall playing both sides of this variation, long considered rather drawish, with the more incisive 11.Na4 in the 1990s.

Dec-18-20  okiesooner: If 25...Rxb3 White cannot play 26. Rxd5?? because of the bank-rank mate.

And after 25...Rb4 as in the game, if 26. f4 26...Bd4+ blunders away the Bishop. Here if 26...Bb2 27 Rfxd5. The other White Rook can stay on the first rank to forestall a possible back-rank mate.

Apr-26-25  xjian77: From "Der beste Zug" by Hort & Jansa (1982).
28...Rc6? 29.Rd8+ Ke7 30.Rfd5 (30...Ba1 31.R5d7 Ke6 32.Ng7#) 1-0
