Dec-02-08  cghlime: "Blunders and Brilliancies" by Ian Mullen and Moe Moss (Pergammon Chess, 1990): Steinitz missed a perpetual check by 42. fxe5 ♖b3 43. ♖xh6+ ♔g6 44. ♖g7+
Dec-02-08  sfeuler: <cghlime> Blacks King can't go from h8 to g6 on your 43rd move and Whites rook can't go from h6 to g7 on your 44th move - plus I don't see the perpetual after Blacks King walks thru the 8th rank to the B-file where a Rook check on the 6th rank would drop the rook? Can you explain the books line?
Dec-02-08  cghlime: Sorry, should be 42. fxe5 ♖b3 43. ♖xh6+ ♔g7 44. ♖h7+

Book says: "Black cannot play an eventual ...♔xe5 because of f4#; nor can the King venture to b6 because of ♖b7+"

It seems like the Black King should be able to find refuge somewhere, but I don't see how.

Dec-02-08  sfeuler: Why not 43...Kg8 to keep the Black Rook off the 7th rank? Then if White continues to check with the Rook on the 6th rank, the Black King can just walk the 8th rank to the b file and he's safe. Once Blacks King gets to the b file there are no more White Rook checks, else White loses his Rook on b6 to Blacks Rook. There must be something that I'm missing...?

I don't think 43...♔g8 will keep the ♖ off the 7th rank: 44. Bd5+ Kf8 45. Rh8+ Ke7 46. Rh7+

Dec-05-08  sfeuler: Yep, I'm finally convinced! Thanks cghlime for going through this with me!
Dec-05-08  cghlime: I was skeptical too, but it looks like the book was right!
Apr-11-09  sfeuler: Need to remember this drawing theme!
