Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-30-02  refutor: after 29. ... Nc4 white is forced to go along with the repetition. karpov's knight is poisoned because the two connected passed pawns would be too strong for kalinkin's rook

DanQuigley: 16...Nxd5 was Karpov's attempted improvement upon 16...h6. Although better, it was not good enough to prove Black had a desirable game. After 14...d5, 15.exd5 has proven to be a rather complete antidote even though White mistakenly plays 15.Nxe5 more often.

DanQuigley: White truly erred by not restoring material equality by playing 18.Qxd4. All of his pieces are better placed than Karpov's. Even still, it's amazing to watch Karpov claw his way back after 18.Be4?!

DanQuigley: White missed a winning tactic with 20.Nxf7.
