keypusher: A strange game! Karpov's 14...Be5, 16...Bd4, 17...e5 manuever is something I have never seen the likes of before. But why did Olafsson feel he had to give up the exchange?
Mar-31-06  nescio: <keypusher: But why did Olafsson feel he had to give up the exchange?> He had probably planned the exchange sacrifice when he played 29.Rd3, to make it possible to advance his pawns and, judging by the move number, he may have lacked the time to adjust. Besides, what else is there? After 31.bxa4 e4 he has to play Rxc3 anyway.
Mar-02-13  Everett: Karpov's DSB proved so effective in being a nuisance to Olafsson's coordination that the latter sacs the exchange in return for a lost game.

Reminds me of this game Gelfand vs Karpov, 1994

I realized recently that due to viewing the chess board on dark mode with inverted colors, I've been mixing up the terms LSB and DSB in my comments.

This has effectively ruined my reputation on this site as a brilliant chess mind and commentator of the highest order.

Oh well. I guess I'll always have my reggae band.
