Feb-22-14  ChemMac: I was curious about the Falkbeer counter-gambit; whether this is more promising for Black than King's Gambit Accepted lines. This game didn't help; neither player seemed exactly reliable!

perfidious: <ChemMac> This form of Falkbeer is much the most common line now, with Black having difficulties in the time-honoured 3....e4 variation, not least of which occurred in the famous game Bronstein vs Tal, 1968.

Long ago, I had one game on each side of the position which arises after 3....c6. Managed to win the encounter with White after the line 4.Nc3 exf4 5.Nf3, but my 2400 opponent got a playable position. In the other game, White played 4.Qe2, which gained a poor reputation after Alekhine vs P F Johner, 1911, though the young Alekhine's play was very weak.

In the eighties, used to accept the KG and liked Becker's 3....h6, to transpose to the Classical without allowing White to enter the Kieseritzky.
