Nov-26-05  Chopin: A beautiful combination to end the game by Garci.

  perfidious: While not an appealing prospect to an attacking player such as Hoyos-Millan, 13.c4 was necessary, as in this game: Murey vs L Verat, 1997.

  Domdaniel: Nice.

  Domdaniel: White can't castle on move 13, as 13.0-0 Qb6+ picks up the hanging Bishop. But 13.Bc6 is suicidal, and Black finds a neat way to exploit the open King and loose pieces.

Maybe White could survive with 13.Be2, though Black has a clear edge.

If you're listening, <notyetagm>, I think this short game exemplifies some of your regular themes.

Dec-23-11  King Death: <Domdaniel> Check out this game. I'll bet it's the same players: L B Hoyos-Millan vs G Garcia, 1986.

  Domdaniel: <King Death> Fascinating. And I'm sure you're right -- the coincidence is far too great.

Probably some book (or site or zine) had the short version of the game, with surnames only. When it was submitted, they chose the wrong Garcia. Then it gets submitted again, with both names slightly different and some extra moves -- enough to fool CG's duplicate detector.

It should make a nice gift for the CG Librarian to work out.

Aesthetically, I think I prefer resignation after ...Re8+, but I'd guess the other moves were played.

  Domdaniel: I actually came across it during the Clue Hunt. Usually, you check a game and keep going -- but I was looking for a pattern of pieces, so I played quickly through the game.

I left 'Nice' as a marker to remind myself to come back for another look.

I guess you used the 'Find Similar Games' feature?

Dec-23-11  King Death: <Domdaniel> I did.

  Domdaniel: The finish, of course, is 19.axb4 Qxd5+ 20.Kc3 Rc8#.

Very pretty finale.

LPDO comes to mind hereabouts, such was the looseness of White's game.

Dec-03-16  Steve.Patzer: I actually figured this one out!

  perfidious: Another POTD featuring two opponents I faced, both in the early 1990s.
Dec-03-16  Cheapo by the Dozen: Once again, the puzzle fails on the Larsen Principle -- when there's only one move that could possibly work, you play it, whether or not you've calculated all the consequences and continuations. Nice game. Nice combination. Bad puzzle.
Dec-03-16  YouRang: Saturday 13...?

The main thing I see is that black's Nd5 is in take. My first thought was just to move it out of the way <13...Nf6>.

Slightly boring, but not without some threats, especially since white's king is rather exposed. Black's immediate threats include ...Qb6 (attacking LSB and Pb2 and f2) and then ...Ng4 (further attacking f2, hence ...Qf2+), as well as ...Qe7+ and ...Bg4.

I expected white to parry this threat with <14.Nd4> (guarding Bc6), but then <14...Bc5 15.c3 Bg4>

Without knowing for sure how it will go from here, I'm feeling that white must be pretty uncomfortable. There are too many avenues aimed at the king position, and it's unlikely that white will have a chance to castle.

~~~
Didn't see 13...Ba6, but it's a good move that shows the power of controlling squares around an exposed king.
Dec-03-16  AlicesKnight: Found myself looking at ....Re8+ with a variety of continuations greatly interesting but not winning, so nowhere near. A nice finish.
Dec-03-16  newzild: In the final position, 19. c3 is forced. Play might continue:
19. c3 Qxd5+
20. Kc2 Re2+
21. Kb1
Black has a queen for rook and knight. I'm not sure what Black's next move should be, but 21...Bxc3 looks pretty good.
Dec-03-16  johngalt5579: I like 13...Re8,14Be8,Qe8,15Qe2,Ba6.
Dec-03-16  hcgflynn: How does black win after 17. Qd4? Interesting position.
Dec-03-16  johngalt5579: Oh no! After 16Qe8,Re8 white king escapes to D file. Ba6 first must be better.
Dec-03-16  johngalt5579: After 17Qd4 Bc5 looks pretty strong. I could be wrong I am just a neophyte.
Dec-03-16  PhilFeeley: If white saves his queen on move 17, Bb4 is double-check, mate!
Dec-03-16  gofer: Hmmm, I didn't play Ba6 immediately, so I get "Null Point" again. Instead I went for...
13 ... Re8+
14 Bxe8 Qxe8+
15 Qe2 Ba6!
16 Qxe8+ Rxe8+
17 Kd1 Ne3+
18 Bxe3 fxe3
19 Re1 e2+
20 Kc1 Bf4+
21 Kb1 Be3
22 Ka2 Bf2
Dec-03-16  wtpy: Ba3 or Ba6 depending on whether i have white or black is one of my favorite moves to play against an uncastled king, so saw this one quickly.
Dec-03-16  WorstPlayerEver: Let's say it's a very open position..
