Phony Benoni: This game was published in "Chess Review", May 1946, p. 25, with a note stating that it won the 1st Brilliancy Prize. This would be most unusual in a simul. (I have heard of "Best Game" prizes, but they were given to the simul takers, not the simul givers.)

According to Di Felices' "Chess Results, 1941-1946" (p. 260), Koltanowski played in and won a six-player double round robin tournament in Havana which ran from March 25-April 5, 1946. One of his opponents is given as <Jose Alonso>.

"American Chess Bulletin" (March / April 1946, p. 40) reports on the tournament, but mentions only "J Alonso" and then gives a game dated April 6. (Good grief. Helms gives like one game date per volume, and it contradicts other information.)

This may be enough to send the Correction Elves into action, but I thought I'd wait and see if anyone has more information. In particular, I'd like more confirmation of "Jose Alonso".

GrahamClayton: <Phony Benoni> The West Virginia Chess Bulletin #44 (April 1946), states that this game was played in the 4th round of the Havana Tournament (March 29).

Here is the crosstable:

Jose Alonso was the champion of the Artemisa province in western Cuba at the time of the tournament.
