Oct-31-09  refutor: any thoughts on the position after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.f3 d5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 dxc4? is giving up the center really worth trying to hang on to the pawn?

i know botvinniker's have been trying to do this for years (relatively successfully) but this is a different position. thoughts? i do like Martz's handling of the position with a4, Ba3 and make lombardy try to regret his decision

Dec-25-21  Messiah: <refutor> I think the position you displayed is playable with both colours, although it is somewhat easier with White. White's main idea is to finish the kingside development as quickly as possible with or without a Nh3, using the unfortunate placement of Black's LSB, then castle on short, and then press in the center, whereas Black launches a queenside pawn storm. A different idea was seen in this particular game, but it does not alter my thoughts about the position being playable by both.

FSR: Surprisingly, Opening Explorer shows that 6...dxc4 is played less than 0.5% of the time. Black lost in all three of the other games in this line, though in none of them was his/her play very impressive. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... Stockfish 15 thinks that White gets more than enough for the pawn, but nothing overwhelming (around +0.4 supposedly, with best play by both sides). Wimp that I am, I'd just play 7.Qa4+ Nbd7 8.e4.
